F1 Race Calendar Awaits Bids from Africa and Asia

10/10/2024

Several nations vie for inclusion in F1’s prestigious race calendar, with decisions anticipated by year’s end.

Several potential host countries are eager to join Formula 1’s highly competitive and sought-after race calendar.

The Thai government is hoping for a positive response to its proposed street race in Bangkok “by the end of the year.”

Argentina’s tourism minister, Daniel Scioli, recently expressed hope that rookie Franco Colapinto’s impressive F1 debut mid-season could help revive a race in Buenos Aires.

“I’m taking charge because I’ve spoken with President Javier Milei about bringing Formula 1 to Argentina. Today, we’re allowed to think big.”

In Africa, progress is also being made. F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali acknowledged that Rwanda’s officials “presented a solid plan” for an African Grand Prix.

“It’s time for Africa to be part of the Formula 1 calendar,” confirmed Christian Gakwaya, president of the Rwandan Automobile Club.

“Our interest in F1 aligns with the national strategy to use sport as a lever for economic transformation.”

However, Rwanda’s bid is controversial given the country’s poverty.

“A nation whose GDP relies 40% on Western aid should not be allowed to participate in Formula 1,” stated an unnamed team principal after the latest F1 Commission meeting.

“The money only goes to those in power, not those in need.”

Plan B remains South Africa.

“F1 is definitely coming to South Africa,” said Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie.

“F1 has told us they’re keen to come, told us what they need to come, and we’re going to give them what they need to come.”

“There’s still a big battle going on right now—will it be Cape Town or Johannesburg? That decision hasn’t been made yet. What I’ve done is tell everyone to stay out of it. Let me handle it, because we’ve heard twice before that F1 was coming to Kyalami, and it didn’t happen.”

Meanwhile, Spanish news agency EFE reports that Panama, known for its strategic location between North and South America, hopes its new Autodromo Panama circuit might eventually host Formula 1.

“We can invite virtually any category in the world, including Formula 1, though it’s a dream for now, as it remains a national project. But who knows?” said the circuit’s general manager, Pablo Otero.
