Sainz Sr. Backs Son’s Decision to Reject Audi F1 Offer

Carlos Sainz Sr. supports his son’s decision to reject Audi’s F1 offer, opting instead for Williams’ promising future project.

Carlos Sainz Sr., still a rally raid driver, stated that he “respects” his son’s decision to sign with Williams for 2025 and turn down Audi’s offer, despite the Sainz family’s close ties to the brand.

Uncertainty surrounding the Audi F1 project has been heightened by recent leadership changes and, notably, the poor performance of Sauber/Stake F1. Few drivers have shown interest in joining Nico Hulkenberg, the only officially signed driver for 2025 and beyond.

“I have always stood by his side in this matter,” Sainz Sr. said regarding the decisions his son had to make.

“This year has been tough for him, and even before the season started, the Lewis Hamilton-to-Ferrari rumors broke out. As a father, my nephew and I helped Carlos by evaluating all possible options. My role hasn’t changed in that regard.”

However, a few months ago, Sainz, 62, publicly stated that his son should seriously consider joining Audi’s new F1 project, especially given his own history with the German brand at Dakar.

“It was his decision, and we must respect it. It wasn’t an easy or straightforward choice. There were three or four options, and in the end, he had to decide his future, and we supported him as much as possible. And that’s what we’ve done.”

“Williams is a rising project. Towards the end of this season, things started to improve, and we must hope, and we trust him, that this upward trend will continue next year.”

The elder Sainz, a two-time World Rally Champion, believes the outgoing Ferrari driver will also play a key role in Williams’ push to the top.

“Carlos has made a strong impression on every team he’s worked with, through his work ethic and expertise. James Vowles has acknowledged this. Teams have improved after his arrival, and that’s what’s important for a professional and what should always be expected from him.”

“I think, in this sense, Carlos is a serious driver who knows very clearly where he’s headed.”
