Bernie Ecclestone predicts Verstappen’s title victory and sees Piastri emerging as Formula 1’s next world champion star.
Max Verstappen will win the drivers’ title in 2024, but it will be McLaren F1 who take the constructors’ championship.
This is the confident prediction of former Formula 1 CEO Bernie Ecclestone, who said Lando Norris will not manage to beat the reigning three-time world champion.
“Max already has a good lead, so now he just needs a bit of luck,” said the soon-to-be 94-year-old Briton. “As for the drivers’ title, it will definitely be Max.”
“But McLaren will certainly win the constructors’ championship.”
Verstappen, whose Red Bull team is currently struggling, built his lead early in the season, but Ecclestone believes Norris has often faltered once he had a superior F1 car.
“McLaren has two very competent drivers and a very good car. But Norris has made a few mistakes so far, ones he knows he made and would have preferred not to.”
“He’s tidied up his approach, he’s quite good now but it’s a bit too late.”
However, he also believes Norris’s young teammate, Oscar Piastri, is arguably the biggest star of the future.
“This Australian, I think, is a magician. He will undoubtedly be world champion in the next two years if his F1 continues performing as it is. That’s what’s going to happen. He really stands out from all the others.”
Ecclestone was also asked to comment on the disappearance of Formula 1 in Germany, blaming Mercedes for not making more effort to keep a GP on the calendar.
“It’s disappointing that Formula 1 has fallen asleep in Germany. In my time, the greatest support probably came from Germany. Now, there doesn’t seem to be the financial will to do what’s necessary to bring Formula 1 back.”
“I would have thought Mercedes might help a bit more to ensure there’s a race in Germany again. But I suspect it’s difficult for them to make such decisions.”
Ecclestone also questions whether current F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali is truly serious when he says he supports the return of the German GP.
“I think he’s delivering what the American owners want to see—more races. So, I’m not so sure.”
“There have been a lot of great new races in recent years, which is fantastic. I’m happy about that. That’s how Formula 1 has stayed alive and grown even further.”
