Piastri Admits Frustration: Wanted 2022 Race Seat Over Reserve Role

03/10/2024

Oscar Piastri reveals his frustration with Alpine’s 2022 reserve role, preferring the track over testing and garage duties.

Oscar Piastri would have preferred to race in 2022 rather than spend a year as Alpine F1’s reserve driver.

The Australian driver thus delivers a subtle jab at the French team that trained him and invested over 5 million euros in private F1 testing, before he decided to sign with McLaren F1.

After winning three consecutive junior championships, including the 2021 Formula 2 title, Piastri spent 2022 as Alpine’s reserve driver before seizing the opportunity to race for McLaren in 2023.

He stated today that it would have been better to race in 2022 rather than solely participate in testing or be present in the Enstone team’s garage.

“Racing would have been better. There’s no environment where you can prepare better than in competition.”

“During my year in testing, I mainly learned a lot about the world of Formula 1 outside the cockpit, more than I expected. I realized you can quickly get tired of not racing. But I also learned useful things about how to mentally prepare for races. I attended all the meetings at Alpine.”

“I saw that, in terms of mindset, you can’t compare F1 with junior categories. It’s a different playing field when you add in car development. In Formula 3 or 2, you have to work with the car you’re given. Absorbing that without the pressure of racing at the same time was certainly valuable.”

“But if I had the choice again today, I would have preferred to continue straight after Formula 2.”
