Perez Debunks Retirement Rumours Amid Plans

Perez clarifies rumors about his F1 retirement

27/09/2024

Amid swirling retirement rumours, F1 star Sergio Perez makes it clear he will decide when to step away, prioritizing family.

Sergio Perez has quelled the current rumors about his future in Formula 1, which spread across Mexico during the Singapore weekend.

Daniel Ricciardo is on the brink of being ousted from the RB F1 junior team with immediate effect, a new rumor about Perez at Red Bull Racing also circulated the paddock.

“It’s the first time I hear about this,” smiled Dr. Helmut Marko, a consultant for Red Bull in F1, when asked about the rumor that Perez might retire from F1 at the end of the season.

“But his wife is expecting their fourth child. An interesting alternative!”

However, the Mexican driver says he is going nowhere.

“It’s a tough schedule, 24 races a year, but I will be in Formula 1 for at least another two years,” Perez responds.

“I don’t think I’ll be around for much longer though. My contract is for two years, which is long in Formula 1, but I know the end is near.”

“I admire Fernando Alonso and what he’s doing at his age (43), but I don’t think I’ll be racing as long as him. It’s not that I don’t enjoy it, but yes, I have young children and I want to spend much more time with them.”

“Maybe that clears things up and an interview in my country was misunderstood.”

When asked about retirement, Perez admitted, “I’ve been thinking about it for the last six months, but it took me three seconds to make the decision: no!”

“In the end, after so many years, that would have been the easiest decision to make – to leave and give up all this in a way. But I would never have forgiven myself if I had done that.”

“It’s been a tough year. It was hard having a car with some limitations and not being able to say anything because your teammate was winning. Max (Verstappen) was really driving well and the gap between us kept increasing.”

That gap is now narrowing, as the handling issues with the Red Bull have become increasingly apparent, and Perez insists he does not want to be pushed off the grid.

“I want to retire when I decide, not when someone tells me. That’s my main goal: to decide my own future.”

“In the end, people forget the contract. I just signed the contract. People talk a lot about everything, but I wasn’t worried because I knew the situation.”
