Verstappen Overcomes Difficulties to Clinch Second

Verstappen feared ‘difficulties’ and is pleased to finish second

22/09/2024

Verstappen navigates challenges to finish second, bolstering his standing in the championship race.

Facing an unbeatable Lando Norris today, Max Verstappen did his utmost to limit the damage by securing a very solid second place in Singapore. The Red Bull driver mitigates damage in the championship standings and achieves a result that was nearly unexpected before the weekend.

“It was a race on my own; I tried to do my best, I tried to manage my pace towards the end. The first stint was tough with tyre degradation, the second was more comfortable. In a weekend where we thought we would struggle, finishing second is a good achievement. But we are not satisfied and will try to do better,” Verstappen stated.

He lost only seven points, partly because Daniel Ricciardo claimed the fastest lap from Norris towards the end of the race. “Thanks to Daniel,” Verstappen said over the radio, but he would like to do more than just limit the damage: “It is what it is, but things can change quickly. We must continue to give our all, and try to reverse the trend, and not always finish behind.”

Marked by fatigue after the race, the three-time world champion is not surprised by the physical challenge he faced this afternoon: “It’s always tough here, always very hot and a very long race, so I’m looking forward to a bit of rest.”
