Schumacher Mercedes F1 legacy

Brawn: Schumacher could’ve won 8th F1 title

03/01/2024

Ross Brawn, the strategic mastermind behind multiple Formula 1 championships, recently expressed his belief that Michael Schumacher, associated closely with Mercedes F1, might have been in contention for an unprecedented eighth world title, a pinnacle in his illustrious career, had he not chosen to retire from the sport.

Reuniting with Schumacher at Mercedes in 2010, following their legendary partnership at Ferrari, Brawn witnessed firsthand the German legend’s commitment and prowess. However, Schumacher’s decision to retire at the end of 2012, making way for Lewis Hamilton, might have been premature, according to Brawn.

Schumacher’s Early Exit & Lost Mercedes F1 Title

Reflecting on Schumacher’s legacy and potential, Brawn shared his insights on what could have been. “The more I consider it, the more it seems he may have hung up his helmet too soon,” Brawn remarked, speaking on what would have been Schumacher’s 55th birthday on January 3rd.

He noted Schumacher’s foundational work at Mercedes between 2010 and 2012 and drew parallels with Fernando Alonso’s continued success beyond 40, suggesting that age was not a barrier for the champions of the sport. “Had Michael continued into 2014, when Mercedes began its era of dominance, he might well have added another title to his name,” Brawn speculated.

Brawn Sees Schumacher as Potential Mercedes Owner

Beyond racing, Brawn envisioned a future where Schumacher could have transitioned into team ownership, revealing discussions about Schumacher possibly taking on a shareholder role at Mercedes. “I can very well imagine Michael owning a team today. There were already discussions at Mercedes about whether he could eventually act as a shareholder. The first step already existed: he acted as a brand ambassador in 2013.”

Tragic Ski Accident Ends Schumacher’s Future Plans

However, the tragic skiing accident in 2013 cut these possibilities short, leaving Schumacher severely injured and absent from the public eye since.

Franz Tost, recently retired from managing AlphaTauri, shared his shock upon hearing the news of Schumacher’s accident. “I just wondered: How significant must Michael be for a skiing fall to be reported!” Tost, a frequent skiing companion of Schumacher, initially dismissed concerns due to Schumacher’s skill and caution. The severity of the incident left him stunned and dismayed.

Tost’s sentiments extended beyond the racetrack, highlighting the personal loss felt by many in the Formula 1 community. “I miss him, not just as one of the greatest racing drivers of all time but as a person. You could always speak openly with him. He never pretended, always speaking his mind. There was no politics or intrigue with him.”

As the Formula 1 world continues to honor Schumacher’s legacy, Brawn’s reflections and Tost’s reminiscences serve as poignant reminders of the impact and potential of one of the sport’s greatest icons.
