Oscar Piastri expressed frustration after strategic choices left him second in the Italian Grand Prix.
Oscar Piastri finished second in the Italian Grand Prix, but the Australian driver did not hide his disappointment at the end of the race. Having overtaken his McLaren F1 teammate in the first lap, he led the initial part of the race until his second pit stop.
During the race, when asked whether his tyre would last, he expressed concerns about his left front tyre and opted for a second pit stop. Meanwhile, Charles Leclerc managed to regain performance and only stopped once, and the McLaren driver acknowledges that perhaps he should have attempted a single-stop strategy.
“Yes, it hurts, really. I did a lot of things right, we had a question mark over the strategy given our positions. Opting for a single stop seemed too risky, and it proved to be the right decision. I am pleased with our race and what we achieved, but it’s a pity to finish second like this,” Piastri admits.
“With hindsight, yes, but unfortunately today we made the wrong decision, and I was part of that. Charles ran a very fine race and made the right call. The mediums were shredded, the hards were also dropping in performance, and I didn’t think they would regain pace, which they did.”
Lando Norris praises Piastri’s effort, who passed him on the first lap, and asserts that he couldn’t have defended any better: “I don’t know what I could have done differently, if I had braked later, we would have crashed. But Ferrari did a very good job, especially Charles, so hats off to them.”
The Briton dismisses the idea that he could have followed a one-stop strategy. Unlike Piastri’s regrets, he is certain that the MCL38 didn’t have the capability to run so long without changing tyres.
“No, it wasn’t possible with the graining I had. With the car’s limitations, it wasn’t feasible, but we knew it was a possibility. I’m obviously disappointed, but Ferrari did a better job and had a better car, hats off to them.”
