Piastri Focused on Constructors' Crown Supports Norris

McLaren’s Piastri Targets Constructors’ Title, Aids Norris

04/08/2024

McLaren F1’s Piastri prioritizes the constructors’ title, ready to assist Norris when needed.

Oscar Piastri has confirmed that McLaren F1’s primary focus this year is securing the constructors’ title. The Australian, fresh from his first victory in Hungary, is open to supporting Lando Norris if the latter is in contention for the drivers’ title, but affirms that the team ranking remains the principal goal.

“The main objective is to win the constructors’ championship for the team, and I believe we have a very good chance of achieving this,” Piastri told Sky Sports News. “We’ve closed the gap to Red Bull over the last six or seven races.”

“As for my own standing in the drivers’ rankings, of course, I aim to finish as high as possible. I’m not out of the running for the championship myself, although it’s a tall order, but I want to keep delivering strong performances, maintain consistency, and really help the team clinch the constructors’ championship.”

“If I need to provide more support to Lando later in the year, we will certainly discuss it, but the primary goal is to secure the constructors’ championship and also perform well personally.”

Piastri is pleased to see that McLaren no longer needs a specific circuit suited to its car to perform well: “At the end of last year, we had a very fast car on certain circuits, but we really relied on those circuits to perform well. This year, we’ve been quick everywhere, and that’s very satisfying.”

“It’s also a real confidence booster for everyone, as we no longer depend on high-speed corners like last year. We can start races confident that we are, if not the fastest, then certainly among the fastest, and I think this sets us up very well for next year.”

“I feel I’m gaining confidence, achieving good results, and learning more in my second year. I want to learn as much as possible and be as successful as possible this year. However, ultimately, I think aiming for a strong season next year is a realistic goal.”

Brown Does Not Rule Out Drivers’ Title

Lando Norris has praised the progress of McLaren, which now stands as the leading force on the grid in terms of performance: “We are in good shape and the team is in excellent form, we trust each other, we work very well together, and for us, that’s the most important thing.”

“That’s our strength. It’s why we do what we do today—being one of the best, if not the best team in F1. So, I’m proud of who we are and what we’re doing, and it’s up to us to try and continue.”

Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren, affirms that both titles are the aim for the team in Woking: “They are both priorities because, ultimately, to win the constructors’ championship, we need both our drivers to perform as well as possible.”

“I’d like to see both drivers in the top three. We currently hold the second and fourth positions. And the closer we get in the drivers’ standings, the closer we get in the constructors’ standings, so we are targeting both because every point counts.”

“We are therefore aiming for both, as every point counts. I think the next big opportunity for us will be trying to clinch the championship. It’s definitely a nice feeling. The drivers, the team, and everyone have done a fantastic job to achieve ten consecutive podiums. That’s quite impressive.”

“There is a lot of work to do; it won’t be easy. The second part of the year will be exciting, but I’m very pleased with everything that has been accomplished here at McLaren.”
