Verstappen Hails Alonso as One of F1’s Finest

04/08/2024

Max Verstappen asserts that Fernando Alonso’s skill transcends his title count in F1.

Max Verstappen believes there is a driver on this year’s F1 grid who could potentially surpass the seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton’s tally of titles. Recently, the Red Bull driver ranked Fernando Alonso among his top five drivers in F1 history.

In a recent interview with the Spanish newspaper El Mundo Deportivo, the three-time world champion elaborated that Alonso’s possession of just two titles at the age of 42 does not preclude him from being among the greats.

“Fernando could have won eight world championships if he had been a bit luckier in his career by making the right decisions at the right times,” the Dutchman stated. “So, no, titles do not count.”

“People always look at who has won the most titles or whatever else, and they automatically place them at the top of the list. But it’s not just about titles, and it’s the same in every sport.”

“Is the person who has won six Champions Leagues or one or two World Cups the best player? Not necessarily. It’s a team effort that needs to be executed, and that’s why I think Fernando is certainly one of the best drivers in history.”

“Because wherever he has gone, he has always been very, very fast. But you need the equipment to be able to win races and, unfortunately, he has not always had it,” continued Verstappen, before recalling that the Spaniard also has a distinguished career outside Formula 1.

“Fernando is a fighter; he’s also very versatile, as he can drive many different cars—F1, Indy, Dakar, endurance—and he has always been fast in every discipline. That’s something few drivers can do.”
