Haas F1 confirms Magnussen’s exit by season’s end, with Ocon poised to replace him.

Haas F1 Team Confirms Kevin Magnussen Will Depart His Seat at End of Current Contract in Late 2024. An Announcement on His Successor, Likely Esteban Ocon, Is Expected Shortly.

Magnussen (31 years old) is the longest-serving driver in the team’s history, with the 2024 season marking his seventh year competing for the American team across two stints (2017-2020, 2022-2024).

Having made 135 starts to date for Haas F1 out of a total of 175 Formula 1 career starts, Magnussen, who has also driven for McLaren and Renault, is set to compete in 12 more races for the team until the end of the 2024 season at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in December. The Danish driver secured a ninth-place finish in the Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship with Haas F1 in 2018, his career-best result—finishing in the top 10 in 11 of the 21 races—that year, aiding the team in achieving its best ever result, a fifth place in the Constructors’ Championship.

Ayao Komatsu, Haas F1 Team Principal, stated, “I want to thank Kevin for everything he has given us as a team, both on and off the track. He has truly been a cornerstone of our driver team over the years. No one has raced more for us and we have shared memorable moments together—particularly a remarkable fifth place at the Bahrain Grand Prix in 2022, when Kevin returned to start his second stint with the team. He did not expect to be driving a Formula 1 car that weekend, but he delivered a remarkable performance that was a tremendous boost for the whole organization and once again showcased his own driving talents.”

Komatsu continued, “There are still many races to go this year, so I look forward to seeing what else we can achieve together with Kevin as we battle together for the championship. Beyond this, and with Kevin’s special relationship with the team, I hope we can find a way to continue working together in some capacity. We hope to define this in the near future, but his vast Formula 1 experience and understanding of our work operations are undoubtedly valuable for our continued growth and development.”

Kevin Magnussen added, “I would like to thank everyone at Haas F1. I am proud to have raced for such a great team over these years. I particularly want to thank Gene Haas for his commitment to me, especially in bringing me back in 2022 when I thought, at least at that time, my time in Formula 1 was over. I have had great moments with this team, memories I will never forget. As I look forward to the next chapter of my driving career, I remain fully focused on giving everything I have for the rest of 2024 with Haas F1.”
