Hamilton Reveals Doubts Ahead of Emotional Silverstone Win

07/07/2024

Hamilton shares his self-doubt on clinching an emotional win at the Silverstone circuit.

Lewis Hamilton ended a more than two-year winless streak by claiming victory at the British Grand Prix in Silverstone. The Mercedes F1 driver was visibly moved to tears as he crossed the finish line and after exiting his car—a rare display of emotion that he shared before stepping onto the podium.

“Since 2021, I have been fighting every day, dedicating my mind to achieving this. I work as hard as possible with this incredible team, and this is my last Grand Prix here with them,” explained the seven-time world champion.

“And I wanted to win it for them because I love them, I am aware of all the work they have done over the years, and I will be forever grateful to everyone here. I also want to thank all the amazing fans; I saw you every lap and there is no better feeling than finishing first here.”

The British driver, who set a record for the most wins at a single circuit by securing his ninth victory at Silverstone, explains why this win is particularly significant. Besides coming after more than two years of drought and at his home race, it notably ends the doubts he had about himself.

“It’s so hard, for everyone. What matters most is how we keep getting up, working hard, and digging deep. There have been days since 2021 when I thought I wasn’t good enough anymore, when I didn’t think I could return to the level I was at.”

“But the most important thing is that I had people around me who supported me, who continued to support me in the team and who made such great efforts that it pushed me to do the same. The fans I see around the world also help me. A huge thank you to everyone, here and at the factory, thank you all, I love you.”
