Ferrari suspends recent enhancements at Silverstone, raising questions about the decision’s temporality.
Ferrari has opted to abandon the development package introduced in Barcelona for the Silverstone circuit.
During yesterday’s qualifying session, the Ferrari SF-24s driven by Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz were theoretically a tad slower. However, the drivers were not impeded by the resurgence of porpoising associated with these upgrades, which proves particularly detrimental in the fast corners of the British track.
“We didn’t execute qualifying well enough, and that meant we couldn’t get everything in place,” admitted Frédéric Vasseur.
“We decided to revert to the old specification because there was more bouncing with the new one, and with the high-speed corners we face at Silverstone, the trade-off of fitting the new parts wasn’t positive enough.”
“In Q2, there were nine cars within a tenth of a second, and the track conditions evolved significantly. Carlos managed to make it to the final part, but Charles made a mistake at turn 13 that prevented him from reaching Q3. The last phase was also chaotic as Carlos managed a decent lap with his first set of tyres, but we were then hampered by traffic on the second attempt. He had to jostle for track position with Oscar Piastri and Fernando Alonso and couldn’t properly prepare the tyres.”
“As for the race, considering our grid positions, if it rains, the race could be more chaotic, which might suit us better than a dry afternoon. We need to fine-tune our strategy and execute the race perfectly if we are to bring home a good points haul.”
It remains to be seen whether this decision is temporary. The next Grand Prix in Hungary will pose very different challenges with slow corners and a need for maximum downforce on the F1 cars.
