Christian Horner has urged Sergio Perez to tap into his resolve to rediscover his form from the season’s start.
Christian Horner believes that Sergio Perez must “dig deep within himself” to overcome his current slump at Red Bull.
The six-time Grand Prix winner, who hasn’t claimed a victory in over a year, began 2024 with four podiums in the first five races but has since failed to secure a top 3 finish.
He is increasingly trailing his teammate in terms of performance, even missing the Q3 in recent races except at the Red Bull Ring. However, while Perez finished the qualifying round of the Grand Prix in seventh place, he is nine-tenths behind Verstappen!
Isn’t it time for Horner to sound the alarm?
“We are doing our best to support him and to figure out what he’s lacking, as the first four or five races were very competitive.”
“Whatever happened that caused his drop… Suzuka, one of the most challenging circuits in the world and a real driver’s track, he was only a tenth of a second behind Max.”
“Here, with nine corners, the gap is obviously much larger. So, we need to get to the bottom of it and help him recover.”
Red Bull confirmed a new two-year contract with Perez (the second season being an option for the team) before the Canadian Grand Prix, but his form has led to frequent questions about this decision.
“Checo’s position within the team, what he has brought to the team, justified this. But, of course, there’s always the pressure to perform, and this has nothing to do with contracts, the details of which we will obviously never discuss.”
“Checo knows this is a high-pressure job, and he knows he is closely watched, especially in a car that wins a lot of races and performs so well with the other driver.”
“That’s Formula 1 for you, and this pressure naturally exists on any teammate who is not performing. The media start asking questions, and it’s very easy to lose one’s cool at this level.”
“What has impressed me about Checo over the last four years is that whenever the pressure is really on, as it is now, he has always been able to bounce back, and he will have to dig deep within himself to do so again.”
