Hamilton: McLaren Success Shows Engine Strength

02/06/2024

Lewis Hamilton asserts McLaren’s recent triumphs highlight that Mercedes’ engine remains powerful, dispelling concerns about its performance issues. “Our engine manufacturers have continued to do an incredible job,” he says.

Hamilton has asserted that McLaren F1’s recent race-winning status demonstrates that the engine is “not the problem” in Mercedes F1’s struggles to return to the top.

McLaren F1 emerged from a dire situation at the start of 2023 with highly effective developments to their MCL60, and the current year’s MCL38 continues to build on this strong foundation.

Lando Norris secured victory in Miami, came close in Imola, and Oscar Piastri nearly stole the show from Charles Leclerc in Monaco.

Mercedes F1 has been unable to match McLaren and Ferrari’s progress in closing the gap to Red Bull, despite renewed optimism surrounding their W15.

Hamilton believes McLaren’s ongoing advancements as a Mercedes customer team prove that the German brand’s power unit remains among the most powerful.

“I think we’ve always known that the engine wasn’t the issue. In fact, this engine is excellent.”

“Our engine manufacturers have continued to do an incredible job in terms of developing this technology.”

“And in the hybrid domain, we have been at the top in terms of development rate, performance, and reliability. So, it has never been a problem.”

“So, anyone buying our engines knows what to expect.”

“But we know that on the car side, we haven’t done the best possible job in recent years, and we’re working as hard as we can to rectify that.”
