Sergio Pérez reveals his eighth-place finish at Imola was the best possible result after damage and a risky strategy hindered his race performance.

Sergio Pérez qualified 11th at Imola, and the Red Bull driver crossed the finish line in eighth place at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix. He explains that he couldn’t have done much better, especially since he started on hard tires, betting on a late safety car.

“It was the maximum we could do, given where we started. We knew it was a risky strategy, but we hoped for a safety car,” said the Mexican driver, who explained that his off-track excursion into the gravel cost him dearly.

“But I was testing some things with the balance to preserve the rear tires and went straight into the gravel at Turn 16. I had damage that also compromised the race, and it cost us six or seven seconds, putting me close to the cars behind.”

Pérez isn’t worried about facing another tough weekend in the coming weeks: “We think it was specific. Even though the weekend was pretty good aside from qualifying, we just didn’t manage to qualify well.”
