Norris: Pirelli Mastery Impresses McLaren Boss

19/05/2024

Lando Norris showcased exceptional tire management, impressing McLaren boss Andrea Stella, as he relentlessly pursued Max Verstappen in the final laps of the race.

Andrea Stella, the McLaren F1 team principal, is unsure if Lando Norris could have overtaken Max Verstappen in the final laps if there had been more laps available.

Norris claimed after the race that he could have done it, but the very last moments of the Grand Prix saw things balance out a bit more.

“63 laps are already a lot of laps. You can often say ‘one more lap.’ That’s also what Max Verstappen might say. I’m sure he struggled a bit, but he managed to make the most of what he had.”

“Well done to Max and well done to our two drivers. Oscar paid for the traffic issue we had yesterday; otherwise, he would also have been on the podium. We take this as a positive and look forward with some optimism now.”

Was Stella surprised to see Norris attacking Verstappen at the end of the race?

“The tires were interesting, certainly not as easy as expected.”

“We lost too much time in the first stint. We had too much rear degradation and thought today would be more about looking in the mirrors than ahead.”

“With the hards, after initially saving the tires when Leclerc and Oscar were fighting, I think that initial investment paid off towards the end of the race.”

“Lando had the best tire conditions. Besides the car’s pace, tire management was a crucial factor.”

“It must be said that Lando, from this perspective, has become a master of the Pirellis.”
