Verstappen Eyes Momentum in Mexico After Red Bull Progress

23/10/2024

Max Verstappen is determined to build on Red Bull’s recent gains as he prepares for a crucial race in Mexico.

Max Verstappen hopes to confirm Red Bull’s progress at the Mexican Grand Prix this weekend. The triple world champion praised the enthusiastic fans at the circuit but remains focused on replicating the improved results seen in Austin.

“Mexico is always a fantastic race and, of course, it’s Checo’s home race, so there’s always an incredible atmosphere,” Verstappen said. “The circuit is located at a very high altitude, which requires a bit of extra adaptation, but we’ve always had good results here, and I’ve always enjoyed driving on this track.”

“We made good progress in Austin and saw some promising improvements with the car, but it wasn’t quite enough for the race. The team is working hard to address those issues.”

“Ultimately, it was a step in the right direction, and winning the Sprint was a boost for the team. We’re heading into the second race of this triple-header, so it’s all about maintaining this momentum and continuing to score crucial championship points.”

Sergio Pérez, meanwhile, remains the subject of retirement rumours, but he refuses to dwell on them, choosing instead to enjoy his home crowd: “Mexico is the most important weekend of the season for me, and it seems to get bigger every year. Even in Austin, I felt like I was at home, so I think this week is going to be a bit wild!”

“The key is to block out the noise off the track and focus on the job at hand. Ultimately, the most important thing for me would be to deliver another podium for my fans and my country, at home.”

“The car made some progress over the weekend in the United States, but there’s still a lot we need to understand. I struggled a bit with the balance, and we need to resolve those issues to be competitive on a very different circuit in Mexico. I’ll do everything I can to make my country smile on Sunday night.”

When asked about the lessons learned from the developments in Austin, Pérez remained cautious, explaining that it takes time to analyse: “We don’t know yet. As we continue to learn about these floors, we may take the opportunity to bring in a new specification later on, so we’ll see. I think in the coming days, we’ll know more.”

The Mexican did, however, notice a clear change in the behaviour of his RB20: “The main difference is in speed and braking. It seems there’s more downforce than we initially expected. That’s been the most significant aspect, and there’s also a bit of excess weight.”
