Stella Defends Norris - Calls for Stewards' Rethink

Stella Rejects Aggression, Questions Stewards’ Judgement

22/10/2024

Andrea Stella defends Norris’ approach and urges for changes in how stewards handle in-race decisions, particularly during intense duels.

Lando Norris lost a position to Max Verstappen at the start of the United States Grand Prix and was unable to overtake the Dutchman without being forced off the track. The McLaren F1 driver has been criticized for being too soft behind the wheel, but his team principal, Andrea Stella, disagrees.

“I wouldn’t say that Lando needs to be more aggressive,” Stella stated. “I think that every time you have this kind of on-track duel, you learn something. But I don’t believe Lando needs to fundamentally change his approach to overtaking or defending.”

“There are technical details that can be refined. But in this case, if it wasn’t on that lap, it could have been the next, and Lando would have made the move. So, I don’t think there’s a need to change, to become aggressive at the risk of not finishing the race.”

Stella questions the decisions regarding Verstappen’s driving. While he insists he has “no disrespect” for a driver he considers “incredible,” the Italian criticizes the stewards for “rushing to intervene and making decisions during the race.”

Moreover, Stella believes Verstappen should be penalized for his actions on the opening lap, even considering the consequences. “Not only did Max gain the position, but it forced Lando off track, and he lost positions to both Ferraris.”

Stella is frustrated that decisions are sometimes rushed unnecessarily: “The stewards should also respect their own process, and when the case is as difficult as Lando and Max’s, they should take the time to review it after the race, listen to the drivers, and try to understand the nuances.”

“I think the first lap, first corner, can be softened by the interpretation that it’s the opening lap, but I find it much harder to understand the 52nd lap than the first.”

“I’m not trying to criticize people, I’m just critiquing the approach. If you’re not sure, give yourself time, give yourself the means to be as precise as possible.”
