Lando Norris reveals how McLaren’s 2025 car traits have complicated his driving, leading to errors and struggles unlocking full performance.
This weekend in Imola, Andrea Stella offered an early explanation as to why Lando Norris is making more mistakes than Oscar Piastri over a single lap.
The McLaren F1 Team Principal referred to the car’s design, specifically the slightly less responsive front end, which is proving more challenging for Norris than for his teammate.
“Andrea is always right,” joked Norris in response to those comments explaining his struggles.
“Even if he weren’t my boss, Andrea would still be right. Andrea is very good at explaining things and making them clear, and he’s always right. Whatever he says, he always ends up being right in the situation.”
The Brit admits he is demanding of himself—sometimes too much so—which can conflict with his personal goals and the aim of making no mistakes:
“I think that’s what I’ve been saying all season long, that each driver has a different way of driving the cars.”
“I have no excuses, because I also feel it’s my job to drive whatever car I’m given, so I won’t have excuses, though I might have reasons—but ultimately, I just want to drive as well as I can.”
“There may be tough days. There may be days when I perform better. No driver is ever satisfied. I’m always trying to improve, and we’re always trying to improve the car, whether we’re winning races, finishing second, or dominating races.”
“There are still times when we’re not satisfied, when we expect more and want more. That’s one of the things that has made life more complicated for me this year than last season, and it’s preventing me from fully unlocking my potential. But yes, I expect more from the car, and I also know that sometimes I need to do a better job.”
