Hamilton’s Advice: Antonelli Should Savour F1 Drive at Ease

25/10/2024

Hamilton urges Antonelli to relish the experience, not rush, as he prepares for his F1 future with Mercedes.

Lewis Hamilton isn’t worried about handing over his car to Andrea Kimi Antonelli, even after the young Italian went off track in Monza during FP1 while driving George Russell’s W15. The Mercedes F1 driver has taken an active role in preparing Antonelli, helping him acclimate to the environment that will be his in 2025.

“I didn’t feel it that way. We didn’t approach Monza in that light,” Hamilton stated. “Kimi is young, and he learned from his first outing at Monza. We had our briefing together since he’ll be working with Bono next year and, of course, here too, and I’m here to support him in every way possible.”

“What’s essential,” he continued, “and as I told him, is that he doesn’t need to set the track on fire from the very first lap. It’s about enjoying himself, taking it all in. I mentioned that the track was quite dirty initially. Regardless, we’ll manage the situation, and I don’t think he’ll have any issues.”

Antonelli acknowledged that he perhaps shouldn’t have pushed for a time immediately at Monza and has taken that lesson to heart. He intends to approach FP1 in Mexico more cautiously to continue his learning process.

“At Monza, although it was a bit harsh, I learned a great deal. Here, the time I have will be even more critical. It’s a new circuit for me, a dirty layout, so I’ll have to push more gradually this time,” Antonelli told Sky Italia.
