No F1 Revival for Germany as Schumacher Glow Wanes

Wolff: Germany’s F1 Legacy Fades Amid Schumacher-Era Hangover

Germany’s post-Schumacher F1 enthusiasm has waned, leaving the nation reluctant to invest in hosting a Formula 1 Grand Prix.

Germany lacks the will to host a Formula 1 race, according to Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff.

Although Austria’s Grand Prix, Wolff’s home country, is promoted by Red Bull, the 52-year-old stated that the nation fully supports the event.

“We are high-tech, we are innovative, and we have the backing of countless people. In Austria, politicians from all sides support the race because they recognize its added value.”

But the situation in Germany could not be more different, with Hockenheim and Nürburgring no longer willing to take on the financial risks of hosting a Grand Prix.

“I think Germany is still reeling from the Schumacher-era hangover. But it’s a strange German phenomenon that no one can really explain.”

Indeed, while Michael Schumacher sparked massive enthusiasm for Formula 1 in Germany, Wolff observed that other “great German drivers” like Nico Rosberg and Sebastian Vettel failed to replicate the Schumacher effect.

As a result, a historically significant F1 host nation like Germany is now completely absent from the sport.

“To achieve the right return on investment, someone has to invest first. I wonder if Germany’s political and economic conditions make it a place where you want to invest in a Grand Prix?”
