Magnussen Out of Baku - Haas F1 Rejects Appeal

Magnussen receives support but Haas F1 will not appeal

02/09/2024

Following a one-race ban, Haas F1’s Kevin Magnussen faces the consequences of his aggressive driving.

Haas F1 Team Director Ayao Komatsu has acknowledged that Kevin Magnussen has been overly aggressive at times following a one-race suspension.

Magnussen will miss the next round in Azerbaijan after becoming the first Formula 1 driver to receive an automatic suspension for accumulating 12 penalty points on his license.

Komatsu confirmed he accepts the stewards’ decision and will not appeal.

“Kevin races hard, he races aggressively, and on some occasions, for the penalties he’s received, he may have been too aggressive. This time, he did his best, then he locked up under braking and pushed Gasly off the track. So, he received a penalty, I accept it.”

Two Formula 1 drivers believe Magnussen’s suspension is unfair. When Gasly learned that Magnussen would be suspended for the Baku race, he was astonished.

“To be honest, it was nothing as contact. I hope they can change this in some way, because it would definitely be very unfair. I would like to defend him. I have to spend an hour at doping control now, and after that, I’ll see what I can do,” he said after the finish.

Fernando Alonso also endorsed Magnussen’s comments on his automatic suspension.

“As I have said repeatedly, penalty points should be awarded for dangerous behavior—something that poses a danger to the sport and others.”

“I think some of the points Magnussen had, I don’t have the list here, but some of them were simply things like speeding, white lines, starts. Those sorts of things that are part of racing—it’s a drive-through, it’s a five-second penalty. I understand the penalties, but the points for these kinds of penalties are a bit hard to understand.”

Haas F1 will almost certainly turn to its confirmed rookie for 2025, current F2 driver Oliver Bearman, to replace Magnussen in Baku.

“We will inform you later of our second driver for Azerbaijan,” a team spokesperson responded.
