Yuki Tsunoda faces uncertainty as Christian Horner hints this may be his last year with the Red Bull family.
Christian Horner, Red Bull Racing’s team principal, admits that Yuki Tsunoda’s days within the Red Bull family are likely numbered.
The Japanese driver was not chosen by the Austrian team to replace Sergio Perez, with the seat going instead to Liam Lawson.
This means Tsunoda will remain with Racing Bulls for a fifth season. His ties with Honda will no longer be a factor once both teams switch to Red Bull Ford engines.
“Even without considering engines or his support,” Horner states, “we are fully aware that if we can’t provide an opportunity for Yuki—honestly, this year [2025]—is it wise to keep him?”
“You can’t keep a driver in the junior team for five years. You can’t always be the bridesmaid.”
“You either let them go at that point or consider something different.”
“As we’ve said, if needed, Yuki can be available for Red Bull Racing. Nobody wishes for a driver’s failure, but it has happened in recent years.”
Horner hints that Tsunoda might still be necessary and emphasizes that performing well with Racing Bulls in 2025 should be his main goal, keeping him first in line should an opportunity arise.
“I spoke with Yuki,” Horner continues.
“He said he enjoys eating wagyu beef in his free time, but his motivation is to prove he deserves this opportunity.”
“The Racing Bulls team will hopefully take a step forward next year, utilizing the Red Bull rear suspension and gearbox, along with the elements they are allowed to use.”
“As this team and its new leadership mature, it will naturally progress.”
“I think he is very determined. He knows how quickly things change. Who would have thought, nine months ago, that we’d be here discussing Liam Lawson as our driver for 2025?”
“Things move fast in this sport, and Yuki understands that he must be the one demonstrating that he’s the one knocking on the door.”
