Lewis Hamilton reflects on a solid setup but laments his Mercedes’ lack of pace, leaving him starting sixth for the Qatar Grand Prix.
Lewis Hamilton qualified sixth for the Qatar Grand Prix, four spots behind teammate George Russell. The Mercedes F1 driver felt comfortable in the car but acknowledged the W15 lacked pace.
“The car felt good; we made some good changes, and the car was fine. It just wasn’t fast,” said the seven-time world champion, frustrated by the lack of performance.
During the Sprint, Mercedes couldn’t match Ferrari’s pace, leading Charles Leclerc to overtake Hamilton. The Briton admitted he didn’t fight too hard, knowing he had little chance, but hopes for better race performance tomorrow as he starts between Leclerc and Carlos Sainz.
“I didn’t fight too much; I let him through a bit. But he was faster. We’ve improved the car, so we’ll see how it performs in race trim. Hopefully, it will be better.”
Hamilton also reassured fans about his performance after saying yesterday that he was “not fast enough” anymore.
“Yes, I know I still have it in me. It’s just that the car won’t go any faster—I know it’s still there. There’s no doubt in my mind. But I’m looking forward to the end of the year and a proper break.”
