Webber Praises ‘Shark-like’ Hamilton at Silverstone

13/07/2024

Mark Webber commends Hamilton’s predatory approach at the British Grand Prix, likening him to a shark.

Mark Webber was notably impressed with Lewis Hamilton at the British Grand Prix. The former driver observed the seven-time world F1 champion take command of the race, especially when he began pursuing George Russell and overtook him just as the first rain shower hit Silverstone.

“It was ‘beast mode’, and on home turf,” Webber commented on Channel 4. “I believe it was towards the end of the first stint, as the rain began to fall, that’s when he smelled blood. He’s like a shark in the ocean.”

“Hamilton thinks this is his chance. He’s telling himself he’s going to put pressure on everyone around him. He knows he has the experience. And he knows he’s won a lot here before. He owned that race, the crucial decisions, he led the team. He did what he wanted, when he wanted.

“So, you must keep a cool head. I’m a big fan of Lewis. I know I’ve said he’s been off the pace, but [I wondered], ‘Where’s that motivation? Where’s that fire?’ But if you give him a glimmer of something like we saw, then you see it.”

Hamilton was in tears after the finish, and Webber believes this shows the level of doubt and introspection for a driver like Hamilton: “For a man of his calibre, this victory is obviously massive.”

“And for someone like him, when you have a record like his, with over 100 victories, but he still has this paranoid perfectionism, these micro-doubts that people like Rafa Nadal talk about, wondering if he can still do it.”

“Because the bar is set so high anyway, when he takes off, you have to watch out. It’s one of the greatest moments of his life. It might be his last victory, but as soon as the lights went out, he was up to the mark and did the job.”
