Hamilton: Bring Back V10s—with Zero Carbon Impact

Hamilton Backs F1 V10 Comeback—But Fully Sustainable

07/03/2025

Lewis Hamilton embraces the thrilling idea of a V10 return to F1, insisting sustainability must be at its core for the sport’s future.

Hamilton has added another key voice to the exciting prospect of a V10 return in Formula 1.

While F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem, and Christian Horner all seem enthusiastic, Toto Wolff and Frédéric Vasseur have suggested the sport should focus more on the next step—the transition to even more electrified hybrid power units for 2026 and beyond.

“We risk drowning out the message we want to send to the world if, a year before the new regulations, we start talking about something that will come much later,” said the Mercedes F1 boss and co-owner.

Lewis Hamilton, however, believes that moving from today’s heavier, quieter “power units” to the naturally aspirated engines of F1’s past would be a good move.

At Ferrari’s event in Milan last night, the seven-time world champion—whose first McLaren in 2007 was powered by a 2.4-liter V8—was asked about his hopes for the future of F1.

“I hope that in 20 years, we will have great racing and cars that sound good,” said the Briton.

“I certainly hope it won’t be fully electric, but rather sustainable with V10 or V12 engines, with a zero carbon footprint or something like that.”
