Günther Steiner dismisses Verstappen’s booing drama and slams the FIA’s strict swearing rule, insisting emotions and passion belong in Formula 1.
The boos aimed at Christian Horner and Max Verstappen during the F1 75 event have made headlines, with Verstappen even hinting at skipping next year’s edition. But for Günther Steiner, the former Haas team boss, it’s all being blown out of proportion.
“It’s just English fun,” Steiner shrugged. “Booing Christian and Max has become a running joke—everyone laughs about it. The people doing it aren’t actually angry.”
He compared it to his own experience in the UK: “Whenever I go on book tours and mention Christian, they all boo. But it’s not real anger. If it were, I’d be concerned.”
For Steiner, it’s just part of the show: “F1 always needs a hero and a villain. Right now, they’re the villains. It’s not a problem for the sport.”
Swearing in F1? Let the Drivers Be Themselves
Steiner also criticized the FIA’s crackdown on swearing, arguing that drivers should have more freedom to express themselves.
“Are swear words good? No. But is it really that serious? Also no,” he said. “This could’ve been handled in a much simpler way without making it a big issue or bringing money into it.”
With hefty fines and potential sporting penalties, Steiner believes the FIA is overreacting. “Just sit down with the drivers—these are adults—and say: ‘Tone it down in press conferences, don’t swear in live interviews.’”
He also pointed out how unrealistic it is to expect drivers to stay calm in the heat of the moment: “Imagine driving at 300 km/h, someone cuts you off—what are you going to say? You’re full of adrenaline. You’re not going to politely ask them to be more careful next time.”
For Steiner, passion is part of the sport. “F1 isn’t driven by AI or robots—it’s humans with emotions. The FIA is making way too much of this.”
