For 25 years, Bernd Mayländer has led F1 races without ever winning—yet he remains a crucial figure in the sport’s fast-paced world.
For over 20 years, Bernd Mayländer has been the man leading the pack in Formula 1 – without ever taking the chequered flag. The former German racing driver has been the sport’s full-time Safety Car pilot since 2000, and he’s not done yet.
As he returns to Melbourne for another season, he reflects on the moment his F1 journey began.
“I was so proud to be on the grid, suddenly in a drivers’ briefing with legends like Michael Schumacher, Mika Häkkinen, and David Coulthard,” says the 53-year-old.
“I introduced myself casually – ‘I’m the guy at the front slowing you down!’ – and that got plenty of laughs.”
Despite loving his role, he admits his favourite races are “the ones without a Safety Car.”
“Luckily, I’m not paid per lap – I’d have lost a fortune last year since I didn’t even have to come out for nine races!”
“Of course, it’s fun to drive, but when nothing happens on track, that’s the best outcome.”
Mayländer, a husband and father, remains fully committed to Formula 1 despite the long travel days and relentless schedule.
“Standing still was never an option for me.”
So, how much longer will he be the unseen force controlling the chaos?
“I’ve thought about it in all sorts of ways. I’ve got a contract until 2026, and honestly, I know I could keep going beyond that.”
