Colapinto Validates Williams F1 Young Driver Tactic

Colapinto’s choice ‘validates’ Williams F1’s young driver strategy

10/09/2024

Colapinto’s selection reaffirms Williams F1’s focus on nurturing young talent, promising continued investment in future stars.

James Vowles states that Franco Colapinto has “validated” Williams F1’s decision to select him over other drivers by trusting its young driver development strategy.

The team principal believes Franco Colapinto’s strong performance in his Grand Prix debut at Monza proved the team was right to choose its junior driver instead of a more experienced alternative.

“Clearly, the decision-making comes down to whether we use drivers who definitely have more experience than Franco, who will have their own positives, or whether we invest in an academy where we’re not spending hundreds of thousands, but millions [of euros] because we believe in the future of the Academy and Williams.”

“The answer became very simple: invest in Franco, invest in the future of those who give everything, who come to the factory to ensure they help us develop these cars. And in this very demanding simulation environment, they are in a strong performance position. Let’s continue to invest in this direction.”

“The reward is what you saw at Monza. You can trust future generations of drivers. You can invest in them and receive rewards in the end. Franco is just at the beginning of this journey. He has a lot of room for improvement. He has a lot of performance to come. I think we have validated our strategy with this decision.”
