Sergio Perez’s father hints at a potential Formula E future, sparking speculation about the Red Bull driver’s next career move.
The Perez family recently stated they are not done with Formula 1, but Sergio Perez, the ousted Red Bull driver, could find himself elsewhere sooner than expected.
This is the view of Perez’s father, Antonio Perez Garibay, a Mexican politician who has been closely tied to his son’s career—including financial backing from one of the world’s richest men, Carlos Slim.
Claro and Telcel have already left Red Bull, as planned, but Slim recently stated: “Our intention is to support Latin American drivers, and Franco (Colapinto) is doing very well.”
Part of Perez’s Slim-linked support could, however, simply shift from F1 to Formula E.
“I never really thought about Formula E, but I can imagine Checo going there to race.”
“I must choose my words carefully, but I see no problem with him competing here.”
Perez Senior made these remarks during last weekend’s Formula E race in Mexico.
“This category has existed for 11 years, so it’s still young,” Antonio Perez Garibay continued. “Today, it’s the second global category, but in five years, it will be the first.”
“That’s why I came here to Mexico. I’m eager to see what’s next.”
Perez, 34, stated a few days ago that while he hasn’t ruled out a potential return to Formula 1, he would decide on his next step within six months.
Formula E co-founder Alberto Longo expressed his interest in bringing Perez into the series.
“In the end,” Perez Senior insisted, “it’s not the decision of the championship promoters, but Checo’s and the teams’, as they are the ones who decide who is in each car.”
“The best version of Checo Perez is yet to come. Everyone will be very happy and very proud.”
“Great things are coming for the Perez family. The only thing I can tell you is that the Perez family hasn’t given up hope of continuing in Formula 1.”
