Brown: McLaren F1 can and must aim for victory every weekend

10/09/2024

Zak Brown asserts McLaren F1’s potential to win every weekend, potentially clinching both 2024 world titles.

Zak Brown is certain: McLaren F1 has the potential to win all the remaining races and thus the two world titles of 2024.

The CEO of the group, of course, hopes his team will be operationally up to the task to convert this potential. With three victories so far in 2024, McLaren has nevertheless missed quite a few opportunities, including the latest at Monza.

With only eight points behind the reigning world champions Red Bull with eight weekends to go, McLaren’s momentum and form are such that the Woking-based team is likely to take the lead in the constructors’ championship at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

The MCL38 is now on average the fastest and most versatile F1, with recent victories in Hungary and the Netherlands.

McLaren was beaten at Monza by Charles Leclerc, who managed to delight the tifosi at Ferrari’s home race with an effective one-stop strategy.

“I don’t see why we couldn’t aim for victory every race weekend,” Brown shared before Baku.

“I think we’re going to have tough competition, but we’ve shown that our car is good in all conditions, on all types of circuits. We were very strong in Singapore last year.”

“Baku is always a bit crazy, or even very crazy. But you know, we’re going to show up every weekend, trying to take pole, trying to lock out the front row, trying to win. We can aim for it so we must aim for it.”

“I’m sure it won’t work out like that for the next eight races, because the competition is tough. I think we have a three-way race for the constructors’ championship, because Ferrari is 30 points behind, but look at them at Monza – it was them and us.”

“It will therefore be exciting to see what happens.”
