Baku Awaits as Williams F1 Tests New Improvements

Williams F1 Targets Baku Boost with Key Upgrades

12/09/2024

Williams F1 heads to Baku, keen to prove the effectiveness of their latest upgrades in challenging conditions.

Alex Albon finished in a strong ninth place at the Italian Grand Prix, and the Williams F1 driver hopes to follow up with a solid result in Azerbaijan, which would confirm the successful operation of the upgrades introduced at Monza.

“In Baku, it’s the first street circuit we visit after a long series of traditional tracks. The streets of Baku have a pleasant rhythm, and it’s a familiar circuit that I enjoy preparing for on Friday and Saturday, up to the qualifying,” Albon stated.

“I am also eager to test our upgraded package on a different circuit and see how the car responds in these different conditions. It’s usually an exciting and unpredictable race with good overtaking opportunities, which we hope to capitalize on this weekend.”

Franco Colapinto will compete in his second Formula 1 Grand Prix, and the Argentine will face a tougher challenge on a more complicated circuit than Monza: “My goal this weekend is to continue learning, as it’s my first time racing in Baku.”

“The circuit is very different from Monza, and tackling a street circuit in an F1 car will be an exciting challenge. I have prepared extensively this weekend and will strive to progress session by session to understand the circuit and learn more about the car. We hope for another positive weekend for both me and the team.”

“The circuit should suit” the upgrades

Sven Smeets, the sporting director of the team, is eager to see how the Williams upgrade package will perform in Azerbaijan, as his two drivers have drastically different objectives.

“After a short break, we head to a double-header of street races starting with Baku, a circuit that should suit the car and the new package,” Smeets declared.

“Alex will be looking to score points following his excellent weekend in Monza and Franco will continue to focus on the free practice sessions to prepare for Saturday’s qualifying.”

“We are racing in Baku at a warmer time of year than in previous seasons, so it will be interesting to see how tire management will influence the race.”
