Albon Competitive in Free Practice, Colapinto Debuts Strong in Singapore

21/09/2024

Albon excels in practice as newcomer Colapinto navigates Singapore’s challenges for Williams F1.

Alex Albon has effectively set Williams F1 on course for a promising weekend in Singapore, posting commendable times in both the first and second free practice sessions.

The Thai driver clocked the eighth fastest time in the opening session and improved to ninth in the subsequent one. Yet, he feels there is room for improvement with his FW46.

“To be honest, the car isn’t spectacular, but I think that’s a positive sign as it means there’s more time to be found,” he remarked.

“We performed well on the hard tyres, but struggled somewhat on the softs, so we just need to pinpoint the solution. The pace is there and the car is significantly better than last year, which is encouraging.”

“With the updates, it’s been challenging to fully exploit them in these sessions, but we’ll be reviewing the data this evening and aim to come back stronger tomorrow.”

Franco Colapinto, meanwhile, found himself somewhat off the pace in the second session but insists this doesn’t reflect his true potential, attributing it to difficulties in optimising his fast laps on limited soft tyres.

“The second practice was also good, but in my fast laps on the soft tyres, I didn’t quite put everything together and struggled to complete a solid lap. Here, the tyres last for a lap, so I’m a bit off the pace. The first session was good; I adapted to the track and the car in the heat,” Colapinto stated.

Although he doesn’t have the upgrades his teammate does, the Argentine is confident of targeting points: “I believe so. With the upgrade, Alex has a bit more pace, but I think I can put in a strong lap and our position could be good, so we’ll see where we stand tomorrow.”

Colapinto also made a brief detour through the Alpine pit on his return during the second session, rejoining his mechanics with a smile about the mishap: “I just let the car roll; it’s nothing. But it was a bit tricky and it’s easy to make a mistake.”
