Perez’s Pole Victory Defies Expectations

Against all odds, Sergio Perez stunningly clinched pole position for the Miami Grand Prix, turning his most challenging race weekend this year into a thrilling triumph. The Red Bull driver overcame significant hurdles, including being outpaced by his teammate Max Verstappen, before ultimately seizing the top spot amidst a dramatic qualifying session.
Sergio Perez expressed his excitement at securing pole position for the Miami Grand Prix, despite experiencing his worst beginning to a race weekend this year.
The Red Bull racer was a full second behind his teammate Max Verstappen during the first practice session at Miami International Autodrome. Although Perez managed to reduce the gap in the subsequent session, he was still nearly half a second slower than Verstappen in the final practice.
Throughout qualifying, Verstappen maintained his lead, consistently outpacing Perez in Q1 and Q2. However, the world championship leader made an error in the early part of his first Q3 lap and had to abort the attempt.
Perez clocked the fastest time initially, while Verstappen fell to ninth place. When Charles Leclerc had an accident during his final run, a red flag prematurely ended the session, ensuring Perez’s second pole position of the season.
Perez confessed, “It’s been my worst weekend leading up to qualifying, really.” He struggled to find the extra speed he needed to keep up with Verstappen and the Ferraris.
Since the first Miami race last year, the track has been resurfaced, causing grip levels to fluctuate throughout practice. Perez was still searching for a comfortable balance in his car before qualifying.
He explained, “We made a small adjustment before qualifying, and everything came alive. We were experimenting with the tools due to the new Tarmac, and we managed to put in a strong lap when it counted.”
Perez admitted that he had difficulty finding balance and confidence during the weekend, adding that the new Tarmac was particularly sensitive to temperature changes.
With Verstappen starting in ninth place, Perez has a chance to take the lead in the points standings in the upcoming race. However, he’s not letting the championship situation distract him.
“Tomorrow is a new opportunity starting from pole,” he said. “We have something to lose, but we’ll go out there and try to enjoy the incredible crowd.”
