In a race filled with untapped potential and frustration, Kevin Magnussen and Haas experienced a challenging Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Hindered by an electrical issue, Magnussen started in 16th place and found himself caught in the pack, unable to showcase the team’s true capabilities.

Kevin Magnussen asserts that he and Haas possessed the potential for a better outcome at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Formula 1 but found themselves trapped among other cars.

Magnussen began the race in 16th place at Baku, hindered by an inconsistent electrical issue during both practice and qualifying sessions.

Despite suffering front wing damage early on after making contact with Valtteri Bottas, Magnussen advanced positions but ultimately spent much of the race within a group of midfield cars.

He finished in 13th place, just one second behind Williams’ Alex Albon, after closely following him for almost 30 laps.

Magnussen lamented, “We were stuck in traffic the entire race, we had the speed for so much more but just couldn’t overtake.”

He added, “Regrettably, our wing is really fast without DRS but doesn’t have a significant impact with DRS. Overtaking is challenging, while defending is relatively easier since we’re quick without DRS.

“That small detail made all the difference, as I believe I was much faster than the cars in front but couldn’t get around them.

“Similar to last year, we were in the points until the end, but this year, we had even more speed. We hope that continues into Miami, where we’ll try again.”

His teammate, Nico Hulkenberg, started from the pit lane as Haas chose to perform set-up modifications outside of parc ferme conditions.

Hulkenberg executed a long stint on Hard tires, hoping that a late incident would benefit his strategy, but such an opportunity never materialized.

Hulkenberg commented, “It was challenging – I was entirely focused. To be honest, it felt like a qualifying race for me; it was alright for around 40 laps, but sadly the tires began to degrade quickly towards the end.

“The Safety Car didn’t appear, which was what we needed given the strategy we adopted.

“Regardless, we gained valuable insights. We opted for a pit lane start and completely changed the set-up to something more traditional. We learned from this experience, and now we move on to Miami, where I think we’ll be more competitive.”
