Could Yuki Tsunoda be the surprise replacement for Sergio Perez in the Red Bull team for F1 2025? According to AlphaTauri team principal Franz Tost, the young Japanese driver has shown impressive progress in F1 2023, making him a standout performer for the Red Bull sister team despite their struggles with pace.

The statement suggests that there is a possibility of Sergio Perez being replaced by Yuki Tsunoda for the Red Bull team in F1 2025, which would come as a surprise. This prediction is based on the assumption that Tsunoda’s progress in F1 will continue at the same rate.

In F1 2023, Yuki Tsunoda has made significant progress in all areas, according to AlphaTauri team principal Franz Tost. Tsunoda’s performance has been impressive enough to earn him praise from his team, as he secured AlphaTauri’s first point of the season by finishing in 10th place at the Australian Grand Prix.

Despite AlphaTauri’s struggles with pace, Yuki Tsunoda has stood out as a bright spot for the Red Bull sister team. This is evident from his consistent performance in the back-to-back races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, where he finished in the 11th position. His strong showing in these races has further bolstered his impressive progress in F1 2023, making him a standout performer for AlphaTauri.

After Pierre Gasly’s departure from AlphaTauri at the end of last year, there was a discussion about who would become the team’s leader, with Yuki Tsunoda and Nyck de Vries as the two candidates. However, in the first three rounds of the season, it is evident that de Vries has struggled to keep up with Tsunoda in his rookie season in F1. Tsunoda has outperformed de Vries, indicating his potential to become the leader of the AlphaTauri team.

The statement suggests that Franz Tost, who has been the team principal for AlphaTauri (previously Toro Rosso) since 2006, has confidence in Yuki Tsunoda’s potential and thinks that he will have the required capability to drive for the Austrian team, Red Bull, in 2025.

Tost expressed his satisfaction with Tsunoda’s performance in the first two races of the season, praising him for his exceptional driving. He further stated that he is pleased with Tsunoda’s overall improvement and that the team’s current lack of competitiveness is not a reflection of the young driver’s abilities.

Tost also mentioned that although Sergio Perez has a contract for the following year, he believes Tsunoda is on the right path towards becoming a top-performing driver in F1.

According to Franz Tost, he believes that Yuki Tsunoda should continue driving for AlphaTauri in 2024 before moving up to Red Bull in 2025, as he will be better equipped to handle the challenges of the team at that point.

Meanwhile, Tsunoda was not completely satisfied with his performance in the Australian Grand Prix, despite a strong start that saw him briefly in fifth place. He was hoping for more from the race and likely aims to continue improving his performance throughout the rest of the season.

Tsunoda expressed disappointment with his final position of P10 in the Australian Grand Prix, stating that he could have scored points in P5 if the red flag had not disrupted his race. He explained that the incident occurred behind him after he had passed Pierre Gasly, which shows that he had the pace to achieve a top-five finish. Tsunoda also mentioned feeling frustrated by the result and the missed opportunity to perform better.
