The Chairman of the Saudi Automobile & Motorcycle Federation and Saudi Motorsport Company, Prince Khalid bin Sultan Al-Abdullah Al-Faisal, has expressed his desire for Saudi Arabia to eventually establish its own Formula 1 team.

The country has been expanding its presence in the sport with the recent addition of a grand prix in Jeddah, the involvement of its oil company Aramco as a global partner, and partnerships with Aston Martin and McLaren through Neom. Wealthy Gulf nations have also expanded into ownership in other sports, such as Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund acquiring Newcastle United in 2021.

Prince Khalid noted that Saudi Arabia has a rich history with motorsport, having been the first Middle East country involved in Formula 1 through a sponsorship deal with Williams in 1978.

He expressed his pride in seeing the name of a Saudi Arabian company in such a prestigious international event and said that this inspired him to work closely with Formula 1.

The Chairman revealed that Saudi Arabia is investing in new tracks, big infrastructure, and new cities, and is keen to attract teams to open facilities in the country to benefit major companies like Aramco. He hopes that this will lead to a joint venture or partnership to establish a Saudi F1 team.

Prince Khalid also stated that Saudi Arabia wants to see more of its citizens in Formula 1 in the long term and hopes to produce a Saudi champion.

He emphasized the country’s enthusiasm for motorsport and its plans to play a big role in the future of the sport.

The Jeddah Corniche Circuit and the hosting of the Formula 1 race are seen as a lasting legacy that will help create future engineers, team managers, team principals, and attract companies to motorsport so that cars can be constructed in Saudi Arabia, and more people can be engaged with the industry.
