Laureus Awards nominates Max and Red Bull team again

Max Verstappen and the Red Bull team have been nominated for Laureus Awards for the second year in a row. Verstappen, the reigning F1 World Champion, is once again up for the prestigious Sportsman of the Year Laureus award. Last year, he won the award after his dramatic title-winning season in F1 in 2021.
In 2022, Verstappen won a record-breaking 15 Grands Prix on his way to his second world championship. As a result, he was a predictable nominee for the individual category of the Laureus World Sports Awards. However, he faces stiff competition from soccer legends Kylian Mbappé and Lionel Messi, tennis superstar Rafael Nadal, Swedish pole vaulter Mondo Duplantis, and NBA Golden State Warriors’ Stephen Curry.
Although Verstappen’s individual achievements were impressive, he recognizes that Formula 1 is a team sport. As such, the Oracle Red Bull Racing team, which played an integral role in Verstappen’s success, has been nominated in the Laureus World Team of the Year category.
The Red Bull team will compete against other exceptional teams, including Argentina’s World Cup-winning men’s football team, Real Madrid Men’s Football Team, France’s Men’s Rugby Team, the England Women’s Football Team, and the Golden State Warriors.
In past years, Formula 1 has been successfully represented at the Laureus Awards by Michael Schumacher (2004), Sebastian Vettel (2014), and Lewis Hamilton (2020) in the individual category, as well as the Renault F1 Team (2006), Brawn GP (2010), and the Mercedes Formula One Team (2018) in the team category.
Max Verstappen is in the running for the top prize at the Laureus Sports Award, but faces tough competition from footballers Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe. The ‘Sportsperson of the Year’ category is the most prestigious award at the ceremony, and Verstappen is among the nominees thanks to his back-to-back F1 championship wins.
The full list of nominees for the ‘Sportsperson of the Year’ category includes basketball player Steph Curry, athletics star Mondo Duplantis, footballers Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi, tennis player Rafael Nadal, and F1 driver Max Verstappen.
Verstappen is currently gearing up for the preseason test in Bahrain ahead of the 2023 F1 season, where he hopes to defend his title and win a third consecutive championship, potentially against rival Lewis Hamilton.
