Hamilton and Wolff talk about a new Mercedes contract

Wolff and Hamilton have their initial conversation regarding a new contract with Mercedes.
Toto Wolff, the principal of the Mercedes team, has verified that he has had a preliminary discussion with Lewis Hamilton about a fresh contract.
As the new season begins, the seven-time Formula 1 champion has just one year left on his existing agreement.
Earlier, Wolff mentioned that he anticipates no significant obstacles to Hamilton’s contract extension, considering he has been with the team for a decade now.
Hamilton has expressed his interest in expanding the diversity and inclusion initiatives established with Mercedes even after he retires from racing.
Wolff commented on the matter during the unveiling of his team’s 2023 Formula 1 car, stating that they have completed several contracts in the past, and they typically undergo minor modifications.
Wolff added that, aside from the evident conditions, the process is not particularly complicated.
“We have had an initial conversation, but I am not inclined to set a timeline since it is not crucial for either Hamilton or our team presently,” Wolff stated.

Wolff also noted that Hamilton’s current agreement has a duration of one year, and they will select an appropriate time to address contract negotiations.
Despite being 38 years old, Wolff does not view Hamilton’s age as a hindrance, particularly after acknowledging that the British driver is potentially in the best shape he has ever seen him, following the winter.
Wolff affirmed that Hamilton’s age will not be a factor in their discussions for the upcoming contract.
Wolff cited examples of top athletes, such as 45-year-old Tom Brady, who have demonstrated exceptional performance despite their age. He believes that age should not be a determining factor in a driver’s contract negotiations.
Wolff does not believe that Mercedes must demonstrate its worth to Hamilton this season, following their disappointing performance last year due to difficulties in adjusting to the extensively modified aerodynamic regulations with their W13.
Wolff stated that Hamilton is aware of what he has with the team and that they have won eight constructors’ championships in a row. Although they made mistakes last year, he believes that their previous successes speak for themselves.
He further added that their team has the necessary resources and capabilities, and they just need to continue the development process, similar to what they did in the last season.
Wolff believes that there is no uncertainty in Hamilton’s mind regarding the team’s ability to perform, as their past achievements are a testament to their capability.
