McLaren breaks from its traditional naming approach by naming its 2023 Formula 1 car the MCL60, in celebration of its 60th anniversary.

The name MCL60 represents McLaren’s 60 years since its establishment, and differs from its usual numbering system seen in the MCL36, which the team used in 2022.

When Zak Brown became McLaren’s CEO, the team’s naming convention shifted from the MP4 formula used during Ron Dennis’ tenure to MCL.

The MCL60 will be unveiled by McLaren during a ceremony at its Woking facility on Monday.

At the end of the 2022 racing season, McLaren finished in fifth place in the Constructors’ Championship, 14 points behind Alpine.

McLaren enters the 2023 season with a new driver lineup consisting of Lando Norris and debutant Oscar Piastri, after the departure of Daniel Ricciardo.

The MCL60 will be piloted by both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, who will be in attendance at the launch event next week along with new Team Principal Andreas Stella, who takes over from Andreas Seidl.

McLaren is a highly successful team in Formula 1, established by Bruce McLaren in 1963. They achieved their first Grand Prix win in Belgium five years later.

The team has won the constructors’ championship eight times and their drivers have claimed the drivers’ championship title 12 times. The most recent driver to win the World Championship for McLaren was Lewis Hamilton in 2008.
