Honda returns as F1 power unit supplier in 2026

The FIA confirms that Honda F1 has agreed to rejoin Formula One in 2026 as a provider of power units. Japanese manufacturer Honda is among the six teams to have committed to the 2026-2030 regulatory cycle in Formula One.
Three years from now, new power units will be introduced featuring higher electrical power and the utilization of 100% sustainable fuel. Other participants in the 2026-2030 regulatory cycle include current suppliers Ferrari and Mercedes, and it seems that Renault’s power units will be rebranded as Alpine, in line with the name of their Formula One team.
Audi, who confirmed its entry last year, is also among the participants, and the partnership between Red Bull and Ford was officially announced on Friday, making Red Bull Ford a supplier as well.
“The fact that there will be six power unit manufacturers participating in Formula One from 2026 demonstrates the championship’s strength and the robust technical regulations established by the FIA in collaboration with Formula One and the power unit manufacturers,” said FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem.
“The forefront of technology is embodied in the Power Unit, guaranteeing that Formula One’s future is environmentally responsible while still delivering excitement-filled competitions,” proclaimed FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem.
“I am thankful for the trust demonstrated by the commitment of world-renowned automotive manufacturers to Formula One,” said FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem.
Honda withdrew from Formula One after the conclusion of the 2021 season, following Max Verstappen’s championship victory with Red Bull.
Despite their exit from Formula One, Honda has continued its partnership with Red Bull and has provided technical support to the newly formed Red Bull Powertrains organization.
Honda’s championship win came after a challenging period during the turbo-hybrid era with McLaren, where their engines were plagued with issues of slow speed and unreliability for several years.
Honda has a rich history in Formula One and last competed as a factory team during the 2008 season.
It is yet to be determined which team Honda will supply with power units upon its return to Formula One.
