Ferrari aims for 1,000 pit-stop preparation to beat Red Bull

The upcoming Formula 1 2023 season is fast approaching and Ferrari has announced that they will unveil their new car soon. The Italian team is actively preparing for this season, with a focus on improving pit stops as it is one of the areas where they were behind their competitors Red Bull and Mercedes.
Ferrari aims to improve its pit-stop performance by practicing 1,000 pit-stops before the start of the 2023 F1 season in Bahrain.
The team has created a special operating theatre in Maranello to enable the crew to practice pit-stops, and they aim to consistently pit their cars in under three seconds.
Ferrari’s goal is to achieve 84% of pit-stops under three seconds in 2023, and they have set up two teams ready to perform pit-stops to ensure that ‘reserves’ are just as prepared as the permanent crew members.
This move is part of Ferrari’s plan to catch up to rival team Red Bull, who became increasingly dominant in the 2022 season.
Additionally, Ferrari is using the 2018 Ferrari SF-71 for their practice sessions and conducting 20 pit-stops three times per week.
This is a significant increase from the previous year where they only managed to achieve 73% of pit-stops under three seconds, falling short of their target of 80%.
Overall, Ferrari’s intensive pit-stop rehearsals before the season begins is a clear indication of the team’s determination to close the gap with Red Bull and mount a more competitive challenge in the 2023 F1 season.

Ferrari is committing to performing 1,000 pit-stops in preparation for the 2023 F1 season, not only to refine automatisms and procedures but also because this year’s 23-race calendar poses a significant logistical problem in terms of rotations.
The team of 60 mechanics will change from time to time during the championship and, considering that they also perform other functions within the team, it is important for Ferrari that everyone is as prepared as possible.
They are also making sure not to neglect the entire pit stop phase, including the moment of releasing the car, which if not carried out correctly, can lead to a penalty for unsafe release. For this task, there are 6 dedicated people preparing.
