Aston Martin reveals significant updates for their F1 cars in 2023

Eric Blandin, the deputy technical director at Aston Martin, has disclosed that there will be significant variations between the team’s previous F1 car and their new one for the upcoming season.
The AMR22 initially performed poorly as Nico Hülkenberg, Lance Stroll and Sebastian Vettel were unable to compete effectively with the mid-field teams.
During the first five rounds of the season, Aston Martin was relegated to a secondary position in the constructors’ championship and mostly competed against Williams at the bottom of the grid.
However, at the Spanish Grand Prix, the situation changed when Aston Martin implemented a significant conceptual change as part of a new package, adopting a strategy that Red Bull had been using from the beginning of the season.
The modifications were effective, resulting in Vettel and Stroll bringing the team up to seventh place in the standings by the end of the year. The team narrowly missed out on sixth place, finishing level on points with Alfa Romeo due to Valtteri Bottas’ fifth place finish in the Emilia Romagna GP.
Despite these improvements, the team apparently believes more changes are needed, with Blandin announcing significant changes for the upcoming season in which Fernando Alonso will be joining Stroll following Vettel’s retirement.
“We implemented all the knowledge we gained from last year’s car on this year’s car,” Blandin explained.
“The AMR23 has undergone so many changes that it is vastly different from the AMR22,” said Blandin.
“We’ve modified more than 90 percent of the parts and more than 95 percent of the aerodynamic surfaces have been altered,” Blandin stated.
The team took the wrong approach with its initial design for the new ground effect car, experiencing similar issues as Mercedes in not being able to run the car as close to the ground as intended.
After revising the car from the Spanish Grand Prix, adopting a strategy more similar to Red Bull, the team was able to make some progress over the remainder of the year.
The team ultimately finished seventh in the constructors’ championship, tied on points with Alfa Romeo, but lost the position to them due to count back.
