Jeddah to host Saudi GP until 2027

The Formula One Saudi Arabian GP will continue to be held in Jeddah until at least 2027.

Event organizers have announced that Jeddah will continue to host the Formula 1 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix until at least 2027.

In 2021, Saudi Arabia joined the Formula 1 calendar with a 10-year agreement to host a street circuit event designed around the corniche in Jeddah, the second largest city in the country.

Initially, it was anticipated that the Formula 1 event would be moved from Jeddah to a new facility being built in Qiddiya after a few years.

However, the plan to move the event to Qiddiya has been delayed and it is now unlikely that the facility will be ready until 2028 or later.

“Ensuring the Jeddah track is prepared for the future is crucial,” said Martin Whitaker, CEO of Saudi Motorsport Company.

“To achieve this, we have collaborated with the FIA and Formula 1 to design a circuit in Jeddah that will enable us to host the sport while the development of the Qiddiya track commences,” said Martin Whitaker, CEO of Saudi Motorsport Company.

“The Qiddiya automotive center aims to be a global leader in Formula 1 circuit design and entertainment, it’s a unique and thrilling project, that everyone will want to visit. But for now and in the near future, the attention and spotlight will be on Jeddah,”

The Jeddah Corniche Circuit has undergone slight modifications, with the most notable changes being a decrease in speed at Turns 21 through 23 by 30-50km/h. Additionally, adjustments have been made to the sight lines and kerbs for safety reasons.

The Formula 1 event in Saudi Arabia will take place as the second round of the season for both 2022 and 2023. It is anticipated that the Saudi race in 2024 will kick off the championship.

“This year the Ramadan begins three days after our race, but next year, it will be from March 10th to April 9th, 2024,” said Martin Whitaker, CEO of Saudi Motorsport Company.

“Due to the sacredness of Ramadan, it would be unfeasible to hold a Grand Prix during that period. Nevertheless, the final decision on the timing of the race next year is under the authority of Formula 1 and FIA,”

“We are waiting for confirmation from the promoter and governing body regarding our 2024 date, as per usual this information will be released later in the year,” said Martin Whitaker.
