Wolff predicts swift end to Hamilton contract talks

Toto Wolff, the Mercedes team principal, expects quick resolution to the contract talks with Lewis Hamilton.
According to Toto Wolff, negotiations for extending Lewis Hamilton’s contract should only take “a few hours” as they are both united on future plans.
Hamilton’s contract with Mercedes will expire at the end of 2023, and he has expressed his desire to continue with the team. Wolff, the Mercedes team principal, has also publicly stated that he wants Hamilton to stay. Wolff said that he has not yet spoken to Hamilton about the extension, but he is confident that the deal will be agreed quickly.
“We still have a full year ahead of us,” Wolff said. “We are very much on the same page, in the last 10 years our relationship has grown so much that it’s just a matter of him coming back to Europe, sitting down together, discussing things and then leaving the room with a deal after a few hours!”
Another topic that Wolff and Hamilton haven’t discussed yet is the FIA’s recent crackdown on drivers making personal statements, which was confirmed last month.
“We haven’t talked about the political situation yet because he is currently in his off-season and I think it’s important to disconnect from Formula 1 during this time. That’s what I’m doing, trying to shield from it. Once he’s back, we will certainly discuss these things with a positive attitude.”
Hamilton has been one of the most vocal drivers in using his platform to promote causes he supports in recent years, and Wolff said that he doesn’t want to judge the impact of the FIA’s decision to add a new article to the International Sporting Code (ISC) that bans teams and drivers from making certain personal or political statements unless they are pre-approved.
“We need to see how this plays out,” he said. “We understand that sports are not meant to make politics, but rather to unite. I have no doubt that Mohammed (Ben Sulayem) and the FIA have good intentions to achieve the right things, it’s just a matter of aligning that with the drivers who have been more vocal in the past.”
“Every time Mohammed has spoken with Lewis and vice versa, it has ended in a positive conversation. So I have no doubt that once people sit around the table together, things will not appear as harsh as when they are being written down during the off-season.”
