Ferrari changes position on 2026 F1 engine rules

Ferrari has reportedly changed its position on the engine regulations for the 2026 F1 season.

Ferrari has reportedly agreed to the introduction of low-cost power units for the 2026 Formula 1 season, as per Italy’s Corriere dello Sport.

The Italian team has agreed to Formula 1’s new engine regulations for 2026, which will feature a 1.6-litre V6 engine with increased electrical power and 100% sustainable fuels, but will eliminate the MGU-H components and have a power unit cost cap.

Scuderia was banned from a meeting of Formula 1 power unit suppliers in December for not indicating their commitment to the 2026 rules cycle.

It is reported that Ferrari had concerns about Red Bull Powertrains being considered as a new entrant in F1 despite having access to Honda’s intellectual property, which led to their initial reluctance to agree with the 2026 regulations.

Despite Ferrari’s initial opposition, other manufacturers such as Mercedes, Renault, and Audi have already agreed to the new 2026 regulations.

Ferrari has had a change of heart and has now signed a pre-agreement with the FIA for the new 2026 engine regulations.

F1’s chief technical officer, Pat Symonds, is reported to have said that the power unit regulations for 2026 have been published, but are not final and that F1 is now finalizing the details.

F1’s chief technical officer, Pat Symonds, reportedly said that the team regulations have been in the works for a couple of years and that on January 25, there will be a big meeting in Geneva with all the teams, where F1 will present the concepts for 2026 and will start getting the teams’ perspectives on it.

“We have been working on the chassis regulations for a while now, including basic layout for a couple of years. However, on January 25th, we will have a significant meeting in Geneva with all the teams. It will be the first real interaction where we present the concepts we want to bring in for 2026 and start getting feedback from the teams.”

Symonds reportedly added that the end of January is when F1 will focus more on working closely with the teams on the 2026 regulations.

“We will be dedicating more time to collaborating with the teams on the 2026 regulations towards the end of January.”Pat Symonds said.
