Ken Block – Rally driver killed in snowmobile accident

It has been reported that Ken Block, a well-known 55-year-old professional rally driver and co-founder of Hoonigan, passed away on Monday in a tragic snowmobile accident in Utah.
Block, a legendary figure in American motorsport, was a competitive rally driver in various series such as Rally America and Global Rallycross. However, he gained wider fame later in life for his “Gymkhana” video series on YouTube, where he performed daring racing stunts. The 10-part series was immensely popular and garnered nearly two million subscribers.
In addition to his motorsport career, Block was also a co-founder of the skate-wear clothing brand DC Shoes. He also owned Hoonigan Industries, another clothing company that confirmed his death in a statement on Instagram on Monday.
The news of his passing has shocked and saddened the motorsport community and his fans around the world.
Ken Block was remembered as a visionary, pioneer, icon, father, and husband following his tragic passing. He died in a snowmobile accident in Wasatch County, Utah on Monday, where the vehicle he was riding up a steep slope upended and landed on top of him, causing fatal injuries.
According to the local sheriff’s office, Block had been riding with a group, but was alone at the time of the crash. The news of his death came a day after US actor Jeremy Renner was seriously injured while clearing snow outside his home in Nevada using a snow plow.
Block was a competitive rally driver since 2005, winning Rally America’s Rookie of the Year in his first season. He went on to win rallycross medals at the X Games and podium finishes at the World Rallycross Championship. Apart from his motorsport career, he also competed in other action sports, including motocross, skateboarding, and snowboarding. His death is a great loss to the motorsport community and his fans worldwide.
Ken Block found a new platform on YouTube, where he became a sensation for his daring stunts and obstacle course races in various vehicles. He was featured twice on the BBC’s Top Gear programme, as well as in four EA Sports racing video games.
However, the BBC had to apologise after Block and Top Gear host Matt LeBlanc created black tyre marks near the Cenotaph while performing doughnuts during a 2016 episode. The footage was never aired.
Block’s death has left the motorsport community in shock. The American Rally Association expressed its sadness and said that he was a massive influence on the world of rallying. Fellow racers, including former Formula One world champion Jenson Button and former rally driver Malcolm Wilson, also paid tribute to him.
Wilson described him as an “infectious character” who helped bring the sport of rally racing to a global audience, particularly through his social media videos.
Nascar Xfinity Series driver Ryan Vargas credited Block’s videos for shaping his personality and interest in cars. Block is survived by his wife, Lucy, and their three children. His passing is a huge loss to the motorsport community and his fans around the world.
