ALONSO DISCHARGED FROM HOSPITAL

Fernando Alonso was hospitalised in Switzerland on Thursday after being involved in a collision with a car while out on a training ride. He underwent successful surgery on a fractured upper jaw.

Alpine Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso will continue his recuperation from a cycling accident at home after being discharged from hospital on Monday.

Alonso was cycling through the town of Lugano, Switzerland on Thursday when he was involved in a collision with a motorist outside of a supermarket car park.

Alonso was taken to hospital by ambulance and diagnosed with an upper jaw fracture.

Medics performed surgery on the injury and concluded that the operation as a success.

He has now left hospital and is expected to be fit in time for the start of the new Formula 1 season.

“After a period of 48 hours observation at hospital in Switzerland, Fernando has now been discharged to continue his recovery at home,” read a short statement from Alpine.

“He will now have a short period of complete rest before progressively resuming training to undertake preparation for the start of the season.”

Alpine is set to unveil its rebranded Formula 1 team in early March ahead of the start of pre-season testing in Bahrain on March 12.

Alonso, 39, is returning to a Formula 1 race seat after a two-year absence.
