2021 world rally championship calendar: Sweden canceled, Monte-Carlo threatened? (dates and times of the rallies)

Twelve events make up the provisional calendar for the 2021 World Rally Championship season. Six other rounds are placed in reserve.

[Updated on 12/15/2020 at 4:49 pm] While the 2020 WRC fiscal year has barely ended with Sébastien Ogier’s seventh world championship title , won at the end of the seventh and final round disputed in Monza , the 2021 season is already disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic . Indeed, the organizers of the Swedish rally have just announced the cancellation of their event, scheduled for next February, given the worrying health situation in the country.

As a replacement, an unprecedented snow sleeve in northern Finland is being considered for the end of February. As a reminder, the provisional calendar for the 2021 season was unveiled in mid-October with a program of twelve rallies, including nine in Europe , while six others are placed in reserve (see bottom of the page). Obviously, it is likely to evolve, according to the evolution of the sanitary restrictions in force in each country.

The 2021 calendar of the world rally championship is the first to be established according to the constraints linked to the coronavirus pandemic. Despite Sweden’s withdrawal, the start of the season should be the image of recent years, with a launch made during the Rallye Monte-Carlo in January, subject to an adaptation of the course to the requirements of the curfew . At the beginning of spring, we notice the absence of rallies in Mexico and Argentina, but the arrival of an unprecedented event in Croatia on asphalt. The series of European rounds is completed by the traditional rallies of Portugal and Sardinia on land. Bad news for rally fans in France, the fabulous tarmac of the Tour de Corseis still left on the side of the road .

The first long trip of the world championship will take place at the end of June in Africa, Kenya . Delayed one year by the current pandemic, the return of the famous Safari Rally, the last edition of which dates back to 2003, is therefore topical, but this is not the case for New Zealand. Moreover, in the absence of Australia, there is no longer an organized round in Oceania. On the other hand, the WRC cars will run well in South America, benefiting from the return of Chile . One year after the cancellation pronounced due to geopolitical conflicts, the Chilean round is replaced at the end of the season, in September. Before that, the summer period will have been the scene of three rallies in Europe, starting with that ofEstonia, renewed after a successful first edition at world level.

The legendary rallies in Finland and Great Britain, canceled this season due to the coronavirus pandemic, are back on the calendar, but not that of Germany. Note that the British event should migrate from Wales to Northern Ireland. The 2021 exercise will end with Spain in October and Japan in November , as part of a brand new event organized on asphalt. In addition to the twelve rallies registered in this provisional calendar, six others are credited with reserve status, in Turkey, Latvia, Belgium (Ypres), Greece, Italy (Monza) and Argentina. All these dates will be subject to confirmation at the end of the year at a meeting of the World Motor Sport Council (CMSA) of the International Automobile Federation (FIA). Usually, the route of a rally is revealed about four months before it is held. To date, we know the timetables for the Rallye Monte-Carlo 2021, which may change with the curfew.

Find out below the identity of the 12 meetings making up the WRC 2021 calendar (dates and times) and the 6 reservists.
